Prior to joining BBC in 2012, Becky was the SBIR/STTR Program Director for the Minnesota Science and Technology Authority. Becky’s professional background includes over 20 years of experience working within the medical, biotech, advanced materials and electronics industries, and consulting with technology companies on SBIR/STTR funding. Becky holds a B.A. degree in Chemistry from the University of Kansas, an M.B.A. in Marketing Management from the University of Minnesota, and a Master’s Certification in Interactive Marketing from the University of San Francisco.

Kris Bergman

Since joining BBC in 2000, Kris has assisted clients in preparing to receive and manage federal grant and contract funds. This includes advice on financial policies and procedures, DCAA compliance, budget development, indirect cost negotiation, Just-in-Time response, using QuickBooks and preparing for government audits. Kris is also responsible for BBC’s financial and office management. She has 20 years of experience in managing schedules, finances and organizations, and was Global Sales Administrator for Comshare, Inc. in Ann Arbor, MI, prior to joining BBC.

Lisa Kurek joined BBCetc in 1997 as managing partner. Her experience in biomedical technology is extensive, having spent 15 years in product and business development, sales and product management with large, publicly-held corporations as well as small start-ups. Lisa’s background includes work with Baxter (Chicago, IL) as a medical device product development engineer, and later in R&D, worldwide marketing, and product and sales management for Millipore Corp. (Bedford, MA). She was also vice president of sales and marketing for Bio Image, where she assisted in reestablishing the company as an entrepreneurial player in the worldwide market. Lisa holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Brown University and a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan. She was an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year finalist in 2001.

Michael has held senior management positions in marketing, sales and business development for a number of life science companies—two of which completed successful initial public stock offerings on the NASDAQ exchange. Over his 30-year career, Michael has demonstrated success on an international scale in defining new product opportunities, developing sales and marketing strategies, and recruiting and managing teams to deliver growth. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics from Florida State University and an M.B.A. from Boston University. He joined BBC in 2001 as a Principal Consultant.

Andrea Johanson, PhD

Andrea is a BBC Principal Consultant with over 25 years of experience in leading international collaborative research projects. Andrea has served as a project manager and consultant on a broad range of issues relating to international agricultural development, biotechnology, biosafety, intellectual property rights and technology transfer. She holds a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Reading University, UK, a Masters in Plant Pathology from Cornell University, and a Master of Arts in Natural Sciences from Cambridge University, UK.

Austin Dean, MBA

Principal Consultant, BBCetc
Primary Focus: National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation

Austin Dean joined BBCetc as a Principal Consultant in 2017 with a background in business incubation, acceleration services and early-stage investing. Most recently, Austin served as the Operations Director for Grand Rapids-based Start Garden Inc., the leading business incubator for IoT companies in West Michigan. Prior to his role at Start Garden, he managed an accelerator program, served as gatekeeper for statewide capital programs, and supported a portfolio of high-growth companies on behalf of Michigan’s Grand Rapids SmartZone. Austin has owned and operated businesses in enterprise SaaS, consumer products, and human resources. He received a BA and an MBA in Finance from Grand Valley, and has formerly worked as a business analyst for Merrill Lynch and Charter Capital Partners.

Jerry Hollister

Principal Consultant, BBCetc
Primary Focus: Dept. of Defense, Dept. of Energy

Jerry Hollister is a BBCetc Principal Consultant, having joined the company in 2017 with 30 years of leadership experience in government, higher education, non-profit and for-profit enterprises. After earning an engineering degree from the University of Michigan, he served as commissioned Naval Officer in the Civil Engineer Corps and a warranted Contracting Officer for the Dept. of Defense. Prior to joining BBCetc, Jerry was Chief Operating Officer for Michigan-based Niowave, a developer of superconducting electron accelerators, where he worked to build the successful start-up company from 2008-17. Jerry was instrumental in Niowave receiving $20 million in SBIR awards. Niowave was named the 2010 SBIR/STTR Small Business of the Year by the Dept. of Energy and, in 2016, was honored with the S.B.A.’s Tibbetts Award, which recognizes the best in SBIR achievement. Before joining Niowave, Jerry served in a number of non-profit and educational roles following his honorable discharge from the Navy.

Jayne joined BBCetc in 2012, bringing with her over 25 years of marketing and communications experience. She has managed public, media and investor relations programs for corporations and non-profit organizations in a variety of industries including banking, publishing, pharmaceutical and real estate. In addition to developing communications strategies for major announcements and crisis situations, Jayne has developed and managed employee communications, websites and social media programs, written numerous corporate annual reports and promotional materials, and coordinated many types of events. She has a B.A. from Michigan State University.

Jody Bergman 

Administrative Assistant

Jodi joined BBCetc in 2016 to help us with such things as CMS maintenance, billing support, contract support/management, training arrangements, webinar support, and other needed assistance to keep us organized and running smoothly. In addition to her behind-the-scenes responsibilities, Jodi is also the first point of contact for many of our callers, providing information and connecting them with the appropriate consultant to respond their inquiry. Her positive attitude and readiness to help enables the BBCetc staff to focus on the needs of our clients and operate more efficiently.
